If you have eczema, it is important to remain relaxed during the holidays in general and avoid chemicals that exacerbate symptoms. Certain cosmetics, detergents and soaps do play a big part in flare-ups so it is best to avoid them during the holiday season. If you’re holiday gift shopping for someone with eczema, it is best to avoid any skin products or chemicals because you never know what can cause a flare-up. Instead, you can stick to items related to activities they may like such as books, movies, or games. You could also spring for an air purifier they could use at home to quell the possibility of flare-ups.


Hives, or urticaria, is an outbreak of swollen pale red bumps or plaques (wheals) on the skin that appear suddenly due to an allergic reaction or other unknown reasons.2  Although most people break out in hives because of an allergy, it can also occur when people are anxious and stressed. The best way to avoid a flare-up of hives during the holidays is to remain calm and keep your anxiety at bay. Try taking deep breaths and reserve time for yourself if you are feeling the pressure of the holiday season.
