Washing your face is an essential part of any skin care routine. It helps remove dirt, oil, and impurities that can accumulate on your skin throughout the day. Many people wash their faces in the shower for convenience, but is this a good idea? Our dermatology centers in South Florida can help you find an answer to the question, “Should you wash your face in the shower?” Skin care is a daily commitment. Finding the right moisturizers, serums, and essential oils for your skin type is highly encouraged. Unfortunately, none of it will matter if you are not getting the most fundamental step in your routine - washing your face. While most of us are accustomed to simply slathering our faces with cleanser mid-shower, that might not be the best approach.

Why Shouldn’t You Wash Your Face in the Shower?

While washing your face in the shower has some benefits, there are also some drawbacks to consider. Myths about shower water causing rosacea, acne, and other skin problems have long been debunked by dermatologists. Even so, doing your daily cleanse over the sink is better.  One such concern is the temperature of the water. As convenient as it might be to wash from head to toe while in the shower, some believe the shower's hot water can be harsh on your skin. It can strip skin of the natural oils that keep it hydrated and glowing. This can lead to dryness, irritation, and even breakouts. If you must wash your face in the shower, ensure the temperature is not scalding.

What Is the Best Way to Wash Your Face?

Although there is no right place to wash your face, there is a right way to wash your face. Below, our dermatologist in Wellington explains the right steps to take when cleansing your face:
  1. Buy the right cleanser. Purchase a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser that does not contain alcohol, which can be drying.
  2. Wash your face. Using lukewarm water, wet your face and use your fingertips to evenly apply the cleanser. Avoid using a washcloth, a mesh sponge, or a facial scrubber, as these can strip your skin’s natural oils and cause irritation.
  3. Rinse. Wash off your cleanser with lukewarm or cold water, and pat your face dry with a soft towel.
  4. Apply moisturizer to your face. Apply a moisturizer if your skin is dry or itchy. Keep in mind the skin around your eyes is especially delicate, so be gentle in those areas.
Our dermatologists in Delray Beach advise that you limit washing your face to no more than twice a day, and it’s essential to wash up immediately after sweating. Perspiration, especially when wearing a hat or helmet, can cause irritation if left on your skin.
