As you have probably noticed, once the holiday season rolls around, breakouts and other skin conditions decide to make an unwelcome appearance. It is no lie that the holidays can trigger skin conditions and make flare-ups worse due to the weather, stress, all the festive foods, not to mention the fact that people often forget to take care of their skin in the hustle and bustle of the season.

Why Do the Holidays Make Skin Conditions Worse?

Holiday stress triggers skin conditions because your body produces cortisol, a hormone that makes your skin more oily when you are stressed.1 Our very own certified dermatologist Dr. Wassef elaborates a little more on some of the common skin conditions triggered by holiday stress.

Eczema

Eczema, also referred to as atopic dermatitis, is a skin condition that causes dry, red, and itchy skin. It is most commonly found in children but adults aren’t immune to it either.2 Eczema is one of the most common skin conditions triggered by holiday stress. If you have eczema, it is important to remain relaxed during the holidays in general and avoid chemicals that exacerbate symptoms. Certain cosmetics, detergents and soaps do play a big part in flare-ups so it is best to avoid them during the holiday season. If you’re holiday gift shopping for someone with eczema, it is best to avoid any skin products or chemicals because you never know what can cause a flare-up. Instead, you can stick to items related to activities they may like such as books, movies, or games. You could also spring for an air purifier they could use at home to quell the possibility of flare-ups.

Hives

Hives, or urticaria, is an outbreak of swollen pale red bumps or plaques (wheals) on the skin that appear suddenly due to an allergic reaction or other unknown reasons.2  Although most people break out in hives because of an allergy, it can also occur when people are anxious and stressed. The best way to avoid a flare-up of hives during the holidays is to remain calm and keep your anxiety at bay. Try taking deep breaths and reserve time for yourself if you are feeling the pressure of the holiday season. If your hives don’t subside, consult a medical professional at an urgent care center or emergency room in case of emergency or make an appointment with a medical dermatology center.

Rosacea

Rosacea is a very common skin condition resembling acne that causes your face to appear red and mostly affects white, middle-aged women. A rosacea flare-up is very common during the holiday because of stress and anxiety. This skin condition triggered by holiday stress will worsen when a person is upset and anxious. It’s important to understand your rosacea and the things that cause it as well as how to properly treat symptoms so you can enjoy the holiday season.

How to Prevent Skin Conditions Triggered by Holiday Stress

The best thing you can do is relax and enjoy the season. Don’t overextend yourself no matter how many holiday parties or family gatherings you’re invited to. If symptoms for your skin conditions don’t improve, schedule a consultation with a dermatologist in Boca Raton to ensure you’re all set for a stress-free holiday with clear skin.
